Carlos has spent the past six months making promises and not keeping them. Either he's being painfully unreliable...or something's wrong.

And how did a "nightmarish desert hellscape" turn into a fascinating scientific ecosystem, with the Smiling God just backing off and leaving a whole bunch of people hanging around...?

Hi, honey, it's me! Sorry I got your voicemail. I keep trying to call when you'll be home, but time is so weird out here.

I've been really busy with the masked army. Alisha introduced me to their cousins, Scrimgeour and Jen, who do all kinds of neat experiments with rocks. And Jen has this fascinating theory about teleportation as a function of how much vitamin B you get in your diet. We spent hours talking about it.

I really miss talking to you, of course. And being with you. But if you think about it, we're lucky, right? I still have my phone. It never runs out of battery. We still have each other's voices. You have your show and your family to keep you busy, while I am absent. And I have so much science to explore, while I am here.

Just imagine what would have happened if the terrible light of the Smiling God hadn't completely retreated after we closed all those old oak doors!

It would have destroyed the masked army, just like it did so many other people in other long-gone civilizations. It would have wiped out everyone and everything not protected by the light-blocking device I invented. (Which is much more scientific than an umbrella.) There would be no one to be with. Nothing to study.

But of course, it isn't like that. So I'm sure I'll find a door, or some other way of getting back to Night Vale, as soon as I have a chance to start looking.
